SOMS (Sandia Ocean Modeling System)

SOMS is not just one model but a modeling methodology to be applied in different modes (coarse or high resolution, boundary layers, with or without realistic topography, in a forecast or phenomenological mode, etc.) according to application requirements, hence its description as a modeling system.

Quoted from: https://www.osti.gov/biblio/10123384

The Sandia Ocean Modeling System (SOMS) (Dietrich et al., 1987) is not just one model but a modeling methodology to be applied in different modes (coarse or high resolution, boundary layers, with or without realistic topography, in a forecast or phenomenological mode, etc.) according to application requirements, hence its description as a modeling system. SOMS is applicable to a large range of geophysical flows from small lakes to large ocean basins. This document includes a description of governing equations and numerical methods and full details of the coding. Appendix A provides a complete listing of SOMS, including its movie-making modules. Appendix B presents the variables that appear in common blocks; this information is essential for a programmer intending to change the problem dimensions. Appendix C presents the results of a physical parameter sensitivity study. Appendix D presents results of a real ocean calculation.
