The MM4 is part of a sophisticated modeling system (Fig. 1.1) developed by scientists and students at Penn State and NCAR beginning in 1971. The present model is the fourth-generation version of the model originally described by Anthes and Warner (1978), hereafter referred to as AW. The basic model structure, including vertical and horizontal grids and finite-difference equations, is described by AW but is presented in this report for convenience. Numerous improvements and options have been added since the AW paper.
