Seven existing relationships between monthly mean clearness index and the number of bright sunshinehours are tested under the climate and latitude of Romania. New (best-fit) correlations are derived. They use bright sunshine hour number or fractional total cloud amount as input. The dependence of the new sunshine-based regressions on month is stronger than their dependence on latitude. They generally underestimate the clearness index in the first half-year and overestimate it in the rest of the year. The accuracy of the new regression seems not to depend significantly on the year.

It is common knowledge that solar irradiation values are needed for sites where no irradiation measuring instrument is installed. The case of mapping the solar climate for a large area starting from a measured irradiation data base relative to a few isolated stations is typical. Thus, relationships between solar irradiation and other available meteorological parameters are very useful. The meteorological parameter which most obviously is correlated with solar irradiation is the number of bright sunshine hours during the same time period. When sunshine data is not available one tries to relate irradiation to other meteorological parameters such as the cloud cover amount.

This paper deals with estimating daily solar global irradiation in Romania (Eastern Europe). A number of existing relationships between monthly mean daily global solar irradiation and thenumber of bright sunshine hours are tested. New (best-fifit) correlations between global irradiation and bright sunshine hour number or cloud cover amount are also derived.Badescu proposed the following correlations:
