流域上降雨产生径流的过程可视为一种水文系统关系,然而,要建立它们的系统关系,还需要流域的蒸发以及土壤含水量和地下水位变化等观测资料。在许多流域,往往只有降雨和径流过程观测。如果应用的目的是设法由总降雨推求总径流过程,则可运用水文系统理论方法,建立总径流系统模型,其中之一是总径流线性响应模型,亦称简单的线性模型(Simple Linear Model),记为SLM模型。离散化的系统方程表达为:

式中:m—流域的记忆长度,即任一输入X的作用效应只持续mt时段;X(K-i+1)—离散化第(K-i+1)t时段流域平均降雨(mm)Y(K)—离散化后的第Kt时段末出口断面径流(m3/s)或者(mm)H(i)—it时段的系统响应函数,应用时先把径流统一转化为与降雨相同的单位(mm),则H(i)就是无因次变量。
