Brief Description:
The model has been constructed at the Institute of Terrestrial Magnetism, Ionosphere, and Radio Wave Propagation (IZMIRAN, Moscow, Russia) based on the invesrion algorithm developed by Faermark [1977]. The 1985 version of the IZMEM model consists of a number of tables precalculated for several ionospheric high-latitude electrodynamic parameters. The model is parameterized by the interplanetary magnetic field (IMF) strength and direction and available for three seasons of the year (summer, winter, equinox). Each table lists the hourly averages (MLT = 1 to 24) for a specific corrected geomagnetic (CGM) latitude; there are 33 rows for CGM Lat. from 57 to 89 in a step of one degree. Eight parameters of the high-latitude ionospheric electrodynamics can be determined for the specific IMF strength and orientation (Bx, By, Bz): geomagnetic perturbation vectors at the Earth's surface, electrostatic field potential at the ionospheric altitude, as well as electric field vectors, field-aligned currents, ionospheric current vectors, equivalent current vectors, and Joule heating rate. More information can be found in Feldstein et al. [1984], Feldstein and Levitin [1986], Papitashvili et al. [1983; 1994], and on the Web: http://www.sprl.umich.edu/MIST/izmem.html.
